About the Inn...

Picture
The Inn by the Bandstand is a federal style townhouse built in 1809 that is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. The home was built for George Sullivan, a lawyer who was twice New Hampshire state attorney general, a state representative and served as a member of Congress. His father was General John Sullivan, of Bunker Hill fame.

Many of the original features of the home survive, including ten working fireplaces, beautiful high ceilings with crown moldings, wide plank wood floors in many of the rooms and a wonderful curved banister rising up to the third floor. During the middle 1800's, the home was used as the Squamscott Hotel. By 1899 the home was purchased by Otis H. Sleeper for use as his private residence. He was jeweler and around 1910 the shop that is next door was built to house his business. Today, the shop is home to our shop "Cornucopia Wine and Cheese Market" a place filled with wonderful selection of wines and tasty cheeses from around the world.

Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted and shown through the house which is yours to enjoy. The common areas are appointed with antiques, period furnishings, fireplaces, and original 18th and 19th century artwork. The living room, with its fireplace, wingback chairs, and antique furnishings is the perfect place to enjoy a hot cup of tea and relax.

Coffee, tea and orange juice is also available. Please let your innkeeper know of your plans for breakfast upon arrival so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

What people are saying about the Inn...

Here are some testimonials from past guests.
My husband and I stayed at Inn on the Bandstand when we visited PEA for Parents' Weekend. It was our third stay, and it just gets better. The facilities are charming and welcoming, the bed one of the most comfortable I have slept in, and the thoughtful details—warm chocolate chip cookies, hot tea and coffee around the clock, sherry in the room—made our stay particularly special. We also loved that our son's dorm room was a five-minute walk from the inn. We parked our car in the free lot behind the inn and walked everywhere. Put simply, we loved it. Susan is a gracious host who bends over backward to give you a pleasant stay.

This was my first experience with a B&B. This historic inn has a lot of character and is beautifully decorated. The innkeeper, Susan and her sister, Laurie, were wonderful hosts who seemed like family by the time we left. Their breakfasts were special: coffee, juice, a beautifully served fruit plate followed by an egg and cheese dish and a muffin. I highly recommend this inn!

My husband and I stay at this inn once a year. It's become a nice tradition...The innkeeper, Susan, is always updating and working on this beautiful inn. She's non-intrusive and you can come and go as you please. Although, if you do want to have a conversation, Susan is a very interesting person to talk to and very knowledgable about Exeter.
There's a nice big dining room where you can have coffee, tea and hot chocolate 24 hrs. The room rate also includes breakfast.
The last time we stayed there, Susan made us homemade cookies after we got back from dinner. That was a nice surprise.
We look forward every year to visiting this beautiful inn as well as seeing Susan and her wonderful dog.
